Neutral Switzerland hoists Ukraine flags again and wonders why no Putin summit materializes

Switzerland faces growing tension between its traditional neutrality and support for Ukraine in the conflict with Russia. Zurich's decision to raise Ukrainian flags again has surprised citizens and highlighted the country's complex diplomatic position.

Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis attempts to maintain dialogue with Moscow while simultaneously demonstrating support for Ukraine. The Swiss government has indicated willingness to host peace negotiations between Putin and Zelensky in Geneva, even offering Putin immunity from ICC prosecution. This immunity offer follows the ICC's arrest warrant for Putin regarding alleged Ukrainian child deportations.

Russia rejects the court's jurisdiction, complicating diplomatic efforts. The potential peace summit was initially promoted by Trump through consultations with European leaders, but the Kremlin remains hesitant.

Switzerland's approach appears contradictory, as Zurich displays clear pro-Ukrainian support while attempting neutrality. For the 70,000 Ukrainians in Switzerland, these gestures are meaningful, with 92% wanting to remain permanently.

This situation suggests Switzerland is gradually abandoning its neutral mediator role, potentially compromising its diplomatic credibility.
