Vampire Diaries Star Reveals Pay Inequality Battle

Nina Dobrev has opened up about her struggle for equal pay during her time on The Vampire Diaries. Despite being the female lead and playing dual roles as Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce, she was among the lowest-paid cast members in the first two seasons. Her dual role meant double the workload - more time on set and twice as many lines to memorize.

When she requested fair compensation for playing Katherine, the studio reportedly instructed writers to reduce the character's appearances to avoid paying her more. Co-creator Julie Plec confirmed having to negotiate extensively with the network.

Although Dobrev eventually secured a higher salary, she never achieved pay equality with male co-stars Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder. Feeling undervalued, she left after six seasons.

For her Season 8 return, she was initially offered significantly reduced pay but refused, stating her position was about principle and equal treatment rather than money.
