Syrian Leader Calls for Redefinition of Russia-Syria Relations

Syrian President Ahmed al-Scharaa made his first official visit to Moscow since taking power, meeting with Vladimir Putin to discuss redefining bilateral relations. Al-Scharaa emphasized maintaining Syria's sovereignty while acknowledging historical ties and strategic connections between the nations.

Putin expressed willingness to continue regular diplomatic consultations and offered comprehensive reconstruction support, particularly for infrastructure sectors like energy, transportation, and railways. A key discussion point involved Russian military installations, especially the Hmeimim air base in Latakia, with al-Scharaa seeking new arrangements for these facilities. Russia committed to helping rebuild infrastructure originally developed during the Soviet era.

Al-Scharaa claimed his forces gained power through negotiations with Russia, suggesting a managed political transition. The controversial issue of former President Assad, currently residing in Moscow, was addressed, with Syria reportedly requesting his extradition, which Russia firmly declined for humanitarian reasons.

The meeting highlighted the complex transformation of Syrian-Russian relations, as Russia previously supported Assad's government against opposition groups that are now integrated into Syria's new military structure, including former Al-Qaeda affiliate HTS.
